Coming off a big win against the Drumheller Dragons the Canucks were looking to carry their momentum into the second round. Unfortunately things didn’t work out the way we would have liked but the Canucks have had a stellar 2016-2017 season, we couldn’t be prouder.
Opening the series last Friday night the Canucks hit the ice ready for a battle. The Oilers opened the scoring in the first period with a goal by #18 Carter Huber at 5:20. The Canucks fought back but were unable to get one on the board. Shots at the end of the period were 16-10 in favour of the Oilers.
In the second the Canucks were looking to switch thing up outshooting the Oilers 11-10 in the period. In the final minute the #17 Jordan Xavier scored to make it 2-0 Oilers.
Looking to make a comeback the Canucks battled hard to getting 13 shots on net. Unfortunately things didn’t connect and the #27 Trey Degraaf scored on the empty net giving the Oilers a 3-0 lead. Final Shots on net were 34-32 in favour of the Canucks.
Back for Game 2 on Saturday night the Canucks were hoping to even up the series. Late in the period #17 Jordan Xavier scored on the power play to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Shots after 20 minutes of play were 12-11 in favour of the Canucks.
Coming out to fight the Canucks hit the ice with purpose. At 16:05 #28 Brett Van Os evened things up for the Canucks with help from #8 Dylan Williamson and #4 Allan MacPherson. The score was tied up at 1 apiece. The Canucks continued putting on the pressure throughout the period outshooting the Oilers 15-13 in the period to have a total shot count of 27-24 Canucks.
Early in the third the Oilers scored to make it 2-1, the goal coming from #10 Austin Wong. Just under 2 minutes later #19 Regan Doig extended the Oilers lead to 3-0. The Canucks pushed back but were unable to get anything on the board. Final shots were 39-32 in favour of the Canucks.
For Game 3 the Canucks travelled out to Okotoks on Monday night. The Canucks didn’t have the start that they were hoping for as the Oilers took a 3-0 lead in the first. While things weren’t going the Canucks way on the score board the Canucks outshot the Oilers 8-7 in the period.
Making a dent in the Oilers lead #13 Zach McNeill capitalized on a power play opportunity for the Canucks to make it 3-1. Assists on the goal went to #27 Jordan McConnell and #23 Mark Drohan. After 40 minutes shots on net were 21 for the Canucks 18 for the Oilers.
Looking to build off a strong second period the Canucks were back in action for the third. Unfortunately #22 Jordan Davies scored on the power play to make it 4-1 Oilers. Late in the period the Canucks pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. #27 Trey Degraaf scored on the empty net to extend the Oilers lead to 5-1. Final shots were 32-31 for the Oilers.
With the series on the line the Canucks were ready to give it their all in Game 4. Things were back and forth for most of the first period, with neither team able to get one in the back of the net. At the end of the first shots was 10-6 in favour of the Oilers.
In the second the Canucks dominated they play outshooting the Oilers 12-5. Once again both goaltenders kept the doors shut keeping all shots out of the net. The game remained scoreless after 2 period of play.
In the third the Oilers broke the tie scoring on the power play to take a 1-0 lead. With 5 minutes remaining the puck once again found the back of the net for the Oilers to extend their lead to 2-0. Final shots at the end of the game were 25-23 in favour of the Oilers
